Damage we do to the Bay

The Chesapeake gives us an amazing amount of resources, but we don't treat it as well as we should. There are a lot of serious issues and problems harming the bay. For example:

  • Air Pollution: After a while, air pollution from factories will result in land and water pollution, directly affecting the organisms of the Bay.

  • Nutrient Pollution: Nutrients are good for organisms, but too much of anything is bad. Currently, there are too many nutrients in the bay, which is causing nutrient pollution, harming SAV, and eventually hurting all other Bay organisms.

  • Chemicals and Toxics: These can harm plants, animals, fish, and humans. Not only are do they endanger lives, but they can affect reproduction and development.

  • Sediment Pollution: Sediment, loose particles of clay, can smother some creatures. They can hurt SAV, and some sediment might contain toxic chemicals. Sediment accumulation can even grow so large that it blocks ports.
